market order

An instruction to buy or sell a stock immediately at whatever the current market price is. Market orders execute quickly, but you do not control the exact price you will pay or receive. This is the most common type of order for retail investors.

In practice

You place a market order to buy 100 shares of a stock trading around $50. Your order executes in seconds at $50.05 per share because that was the ask price at the moment your order reached the market.
