memecoin

A memecoin is a cryptocurrency created as a joke or based on an internet meme, usually without a serious underlying purpose or technology. Memecoins are highly speculative and risky investments. They often gain and lose value rapidly based on social media hype rather than fundamental business reasons.

In practice

Dogecoin began in 2013 as a joke based on a meme of a Shiba Inu dog. Despite starting as a joke, it developed a real community and market value. However, most new memecoins created after Dogecoin tend to lose value quickly as the hype fades.
